Have you ever had an ac repair company over and been told its low on Freon. So, you get it filled, Your ok right. Wrong, most companies do not realize what they are doing. When an air conditioning system is low on refrigerant, it is because of a leak. Now you might say, “It’s cheaper to just keep filling it” well besides the fact that it is illegal to just fill a system, without finding the leak. Having too much or too little refrigerant will damage the compressor. W hen the “Freon” is in your evaporator the air from your home travels across it. In the evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air thus cooling the air and warming the refrigerant. A properly charged systems Freon will leave the evaporator with 10 degrees of superheat. That means the Freon is 10 degrees above its boiling point, so it has been warmed and boiled into a vapor. Now if there is too little refrigerant the Freon will boil too fast and be very hot. That hot Freon will travel back to the compressor overheating it, over time it will fail. Too much refrigerant and it will not boil. If the refrigerant does not boil, it is still a liquid when it gets back to the compressor, a compressor cannot compress liquid. You will end up buying a new compressor for thousands of dollars, all because the Freon charge was off. Think of it as a pot of water, a large pot will take longer to boil than a small pot. That is why having the exact amount of refrigerant in you air conditioner matters, and having a real technician do the repairs although it may cost more, he will fix the leak and charge the system to the proper superheat and sub-cooling. If you allow an imposter to just fill the system, he will fill it probably over charge it, causing the air conditioner to pump liquid. Then as the Freon leaks out you will end up undercharged again and pumping very hot Freon to the compressor. It is an endless cycle of damage to a very expensive compressor.
